Anubias barteri var. coffeefolia is a highly distinctive and robust aquatic epiphyte known for its deeply ribbed, textured leaves that closely resemble those of a coffee plant. As a unique bonus, new foliage often sprouts with a striking reddish-brown or copper hue before maturing into a deep, rich green.
Why Choose It
Deep Texture: The heavily ridged, arching leaves provide incredible 3D texture and depth that stands out among smooth-leaved aquatic plants.
Colorful New Growth: Emerging leaves display a beautiful rust-red or copper tint, adding a subtle splash of color to the midground.
Bulletproof Hardiness: Like all Anubias, it is incredibly resilient, forgiving of beginner mistakes, and thrives in low-tech setups.
Herbivore Resistant: The tough, leathery foliage is usually ignored by plant-eating fish (like cichlids and goldfish) and snails.
Planting & Care
Attachment: Never bury the thick horizontal rhizome in the substrate, as it will rot and the plant will die. Use aquarium-safe cyanoacrylate super glue or dark thread to attach the rhizome directly to driftwood branches or rocks.
Upkeep: Thrives in low-light environments. Because it is a very slow grower, placing it under high lighting without CO2 will almost certainly lead to algae forming on its broad, textured leaves.
